Latvian vibraphonist's Mikelis Dzenuska second coming on Jersika Records together with his seven-piece band Uzvaras Bulvāris (Victory Boulevard)
"Latvijas Zivis // The Fish Suite" is a suite composed as jazz music with classical music elements, in so called "third stream" style.
The idea arose as a combination of two of Mikelis most passionate pursuits – music and fishing – while the format of the suite has allowed for the creation of a single-piece cycle of compositions, which is a rarity in Latvian jazz music.
The suite is composed as a 5-part cycle, where each part of the suite characterises a specific species of fish. It is composed in a programmatic style, indicating the character of the music for each species of fish and its characteristics.
Stylistically, the music is very diverse, including elements of jazz, funk and classical music, as well as using only acoustic instruments (referring to Miles Davis's "Birth of the Cool", Jacob Mann Big Band's "Greatest Hits"). Using the language of jazz music, the scope of classical music and its characteristic elements of humour and irony, the music is written as "democratically" as possible, thus covering the widest possible audience.
Recorded live direct to analog tape using a Studer A80 1/4” two-track tape recorder without any editing or overdubbing. /A A A/
Recorded on January 20 -21 2024 at the Jersika Records Studios, Riga, Latvia
Tapes prepared for vinyl release by Mārtiņš Krastiņš
Vinyl lacquers were cut on a Neumann VMS70 cutting lathe using a Neumann SX74 cutting head
